Neil and me

The recent buzz around #neilyoung and the fact that I'm going to his Regina show this week got me thinking about the time that I almost played piano with him!  Mark Segstro, you were there, so  if you see this, please add what you can.  Here's what I remember...

It was ~ 1987 and Mark and I were having coffee in The Blue Note Cafe in Wpg. We were sitting next to the stage and getting ready to leave when the owner (who were knew) came over and told us that we shouldn't.  He didn't say why, but we soon found out - as Neil Young and part of his entourage came in and sat in a corner booth, also near the stage.  I watched as Neil scanned the crowd with those famous, piercing eyes. Then he got up on stage, grabbed a guitar, adjusted the amp it was plugged into, and launched into a set of rockin' blues!!  As he played he called out for people to join him on the drums, bass, and finally the piano.  As soon as he said "Keys!" I lunged towards the stage piano, but someone else beat me to it!  I'd being playing a lot of blues at that time so it would've been AMAZING to join in.  But second best was taking in that kind of show, by a Canadian legend, in that small, intimate space.  Brings back the excitement just thinking about it!!

I still remember that, Glenn! That was an amazing night. Not often you get to hear a legend jamming in a place that holds only 50 people. Thanks for dredging up that fond memory!
